My Good Reading Habits – gather around, i’m sharing all my reading secrets

reading habits

I think with reading 200 books a year, I have gotten some credibility when it comes to giving out reading tips. this is my biggest accomplishment okay, even if you don’t like me, you have to give me this and so in this very post, I will share some techniques that will change your reading game this is not guaranteed to work for everyone as I am not a miracle worker.

Thank you to Caitlin for tagging me. Caitlin offered some really great tips you can apply to boost your reading game, so it’s very important that you check out her post. She also happens to be one of the most amazing, inspiring, bloggers out there 🥺🥺 just saying.

The rules for this tag are quite simple. Link back to the creator of this tag, Ally, list some of your good reading habits, and tag some wonderful, lovely human beings. so wholesome.

So here we go.

Always Be Reading Something

One way I have managed to rarely ever fall into slumps is by having a constant stream of books to keep my reading brain occupied.

Does this happen by compulsively adding books to my “currently reading” shelf to a point where I am never caught up and always feeling a compelling sense of urgency to read them back to back, knowing that I will never finish?? Yes, it absolutely does.

A vicious cycle, some might say, or, a foolproof formula to help you avoid falling into a slump 🙂

Okay, that sounds worrying, but I promise it’s not as terrible as I make it out to be. Basically, I suggesting having two or three options in this case, books to switch to when you aren’t feeling your current read or feel a slump coming.

because really, is there anything worse than the feeling of an impending sl*mp?? 🤢🤢

Switching up the Format

This is kind of related to the previous point. I absolutely never run out of book choices or struggle to figure out “WHAT BOOK DO I READ NEXT” because I always have picks waiting for me in different formats.

Generally, I always am “currently reading” one physical book, one e-book, and one audiobook. It’s really not as hectic as it sounds but it’s really comforting to know that whenever I feel like I’m falling bored of a book, I always have a back up.

Also, I find e-books great for spontaneous plans when you’re forced to leave the happiness of your bed and trudge through the real world and audiobooks are perfect for when you’re doing a mindless task and need to occupy your brain.

For me, I like to incorporate audiobooks during my workout and art time bc I can’t survive 3 seconds without  multitasking  – it’s not a problem ok, it’s a gift

Buddy Reading!!

This is where peer pressure turns good. Whenever there’s a book I’m hesitant to read, I always reach out to one of my friends and ask if they’re up to reading it with me. That gives me a sense of accountability to keep my reading partner updated and encourages me to ACTUALLY BLOODY PICK UP THE BOOK me with House of Earth and Blood right now

and also competition. When someone is ahead of me in reading progress, I take it as a personal attack!!!! i’m KIDDING, i’m not ACTUALLY a competitive person. but it does make me feel a stronger sense of urgency to pick up a book when i’m falling behind

Specific Reading Times

I found this to be one of the best TIPS I’ve learned throughout the course of my reading career.

Set aside a specific time during the day for uninterrupted reading. It can be early morning after you wake up, late at night before bed, or maybe a lunch break. Whatever the case is, I like to set aside a time that is solely for reading and not for you know,,,,,mindlessly scrolling through Twitter i see y’all, with your drama and your opinions, definitely not reading 👀

And this allows you to be consistent everyday and look forward to that quiet time where it’s just you and your little book or big book, we don’t discriminate here

I tag *anyone who wants to do this* because i am an anxious bean and I don’t want to bother anyone c:

That concludes it for my good reading habits. These are the rules that I follow generally everyday and they have become so natural for them that I am able to apply them without thinking.

What are some reading tips you use to keep yourself motivated and fight off slumps? Tell me!! I want to know!! I hope you have a lovely weekend and you’re staying safe and happy during these kind of terrifying times. ❤️❤️signature final

  1. this post is so cute and you are so cute :o) you are the most superior for being able to juggle at least three books at a time, i get very overwhelmed easily if i do that and then i shut down and don’t read at all 😃😃 (also your strategy for adding books to your cr shelf is gold!!! i wish it worked for me!!!)

but i have been “switching up the format” lately and it is super motivating….. i’m also chaotic and switch formats for the same book :o) my attention span is slowly becoming that of a goldfish pls spare help and prayers

thank u miss 200-books-a-year-reader for the tips, i shall try to incorporate them into my life bc i know you’re always right!!!! (BUDDY READ WITH ME)

  2. And here I thought you were a miracle worker! Dang! *lol*
I totally agree when it comes to buddy reads and specific reading times. They help me a lot to keep on reading. I recently found myself in a slump though and this even though I had 6 books to choose from. XD Funnily enough Percy Jackson was the 7th book that eventually got me out of my slump. 😀

    1. hahha well, i will take it, if you’re offering
oh mannn that must have been rough but YES sometimes it’s those comfort reads that just help you get out of it (and adding more books to the currently reading shelf is always the way to go)

  3. These are all great tips! I prefer physical books to all other forms but still always read more than one at a time and my goodreads currently-reading shelf hates me for it. Having a specific time to read also means that you’ll at least read some a day, recently I haven’t been reading regularly which is sad but I used to always read a bit before bed.

    1. thank you!!! i feel the same, there’s just something special about physical books. the currently reading shelf ALWAYS HATES US but its okay this is the best way to live. aww i hope youre able to get back into reading, reading before bed is such a cozy feeling 🥺

  5. these tips are SOOO helpful, May!! honestly, you’re someone i look up to in terms of reading 🥰, so seeing all your good habits made me want to implement them too lol. the currently reading shelf trick sounds like it would help me, especially since i’m prone to reading slumps! i’ll have to try it. 😉

also hehe i’ve never actually tried buddy reading, but it definitely sounds like it would help me as well in actually picking up the book and reading instead of procrastinating. 😅

this post was so great!! hope you’re doing well ❤ ❤

  6. I feel like the fact that I’m a mood reader immediately ruins all the wonderful tips I get for avoiding slumps. Because I read multiple books at once in multiple formats and I still manage to look at all the books I have on my TBR/ Kindle and go “I have nothing that I want to read!”. It’s a problem.

I’ve also found that using my Currently Reading shelf is a death sentence for books. I could have 15 pages left to a book, but as soon as I put it on my Currently Reading shelf, I don’t end up picking the book back up for 3-6 months. It’s gotten so bad that at this point I just avoid putting anything new on that shelf.

But buddy reading books I’m hesitant about is actually a brilliant idea! I’ve only done 2 buddy reads so far, but I definitely would love to do more. And using books that aren’t already at the top of my TBR is such a smart plan! I really want to try this out and see how it goes!

    1. ohhh yeah, when youre a mood reader, everything becomes harder bc sometimes you dont even know what you’re in the mood for 😭😭 omg REALLY??? i’ve never heard anyone mention that before. im so sorry for your currently reading shelf. 😔 yess buddy reads are GREAT for encouragement!! im glad you found some tips useful.

i would actually LOVE to read a post on your tips for how to read consistently when you’re such a big mood reader, i feel like it would be super informative 👀 (if you want to, ofc!! ❤️)

  7. Awesome post, May!! I try to always have a backup book to read, and like 99% of the time, I probably have 3 other books to read after I finish my current one. However, putting them all on my Currently Reading is so nerve-wracking and pressure inducing for some reason. I’ll see all of them and mentally go “oh no!! I need to hurry and finish them!” and then I’ll binge read a whole book in a day even if I have other things to do. 😐 idk, I just can’t cope with having too many books on my currently reading 😂😂
I think I’ve only done technically 2 BRs, and you’re so right about that! Knowing that I’m reading the book with someone else forces me to read and finish in a timely fashion because I don’t want to be that person who hasn’t read a single page 4 days into the BR. Whenever I have to work with someone else, my wonderful procrastinator self just disappears and I become this proactive and productive person who reads on time everyday with maybe sneaking in one extra chapter. Yet once the BR is over, I fall behind and slack when it comes to the rest of my books 😂😂🤦🏽‍♀️
Anyways, this was such a fun post to read 💖

    1. hahaha i FEEL the ‘currently reading’ pressure!! it’s really the worst and yet i keep on falling back into that trap. but yes having other books right before you finish a book is always great. EXACTLY!!! buddy reads are the good pressure we need in our lives. you got to have buddy reads going back to back then hahah

thank you!! thanks for your lovely comment 🥺❤️

  8. These are fantastic tips! I have to admit I really struggle with having multiple books in progress at a time (and yet I feel the need to multitask on literally everything else in my life what the heck), but switching up formats seems like a really smart way to dodge a reading slump!

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed the post!! switching up formats really helps me stay away from slumping but it can also be a challenge when you pick up too many books at the same time and then have too many options hahah

  9. 200 books a year is absolutely nuts, congratulations 😛
I am a strict follower of the “Always Be Reading Something” rule – sometimes it backfires on me though, lol, like this month I had 8 books on my currently reading shelf and I felt too overwhelmed to pick up any of them. Fortunately I’m past that slump now, I think. (And tbh, there were other factors at play, not just the overwhelmed-ness)
I love e-books for when I am out of the house too – it is so much easier and more inconspicuous to just whip out your phone to read rather than a whole physical book.
I love your buddy reading suggestion too – I need to start doing that more, because I experience those same feelings you describe :’)

    1. hehe why thank you! i like to think reading is my main talent lol oh my gosshhh having too many books on your cr can definitely backfire but im glad you kicked that slump to the curb where it belongs.
yesss! buddy reading is such a great time for everyone and such a great motivator! thank you for your lovely comment hope you’re having a good month!

  10. Ahh, I love this post SO MUCH 🤍🤍 I’m so, so happy that you did the tag, and THANK YOU FOR SAYING ALL THOSE THINGS ABOUT ME AKDKJFJFDKF I’M SOFT 🥺🥺🥺💖💖💖

we use the same techniques to never get into reading slumps!! (though i’m feeling a bit slumpy right now.. for stupid reasons… but i digress…) OMG I COMPULSIVELY ADD BOOKS TO MY CURRENTLY READING SHELF TOO!! it’s a *problem*! it grates on my nerves so much when a book has been on my currently reading shelf for like, more than three weeks. usually, when i have multiple books on my cr shelf, i’m only actually currently reading one of them, and the others are books that i’ll read after finishing my current read 😂

and YES!! different formats!!! different formats work so well! i especially find audiobooks helpful, because sometimes i’m too brain dead to read something with my eyes, so i get someone else to read my book for me 🤯 and OMG i *relate* to having the multi task every time i breathe! how are we the same person?? this is why audiobooks backfire on me sometimes, because i sometimes try to listen to them even when i’m performing a task that requires 100% concentration :((

anyways, this was as great, great post!! i’m sorry for leaving a messy comment, but basically, i love and relate to this post a lot! i’m gonna have to try setting aside certain times of my day to just pure reading 🤔

    1. i will ALWAYS SAY KIND THINGS ABOUT YOU 😤😤😤 BECAUSE YOU’RE PRECIOUS AND YOU DESERVE IT 😤😤😤

I KNOW!! IT BOTHERS ME SO MUCH TOO!!! like right now i have a book that i havent touched in 3 weeks sitting on my shelf and everytime i go to gr, i am internally SCREAMING bc how dare it let it get this bad??? this is self-sabotage i swear

we’re basically the same person, we’re twins!!!! i love this!!!! yeah audiobooks can only be done with something that requires minimal brain cells bc it’s a lot of concentration in itself. NO I LOVE YOUR MESSY COMMENTS, THEY ARE THE HIGHLIGHT OF MY BLOGGING CAREER

i love your post a lot and i benefited from it too so thank you for tagging me 🥺🥺❤️

  11. THESE ARE THE SECRETS AND TIPS I’VE BEEN NEEDING! I had been wondering about your masterful reading ways. 😉 I will def be making an effort to enact all of these habits, especially the dedicated reading time and the switching up the formats idea. I continuously forgetting to value audiobooks. I’ve been totally struggling to pick up books outside of school reading, and I know these will be super helpful in kicking this weird sorta slump I’m in! 😀

  12. I’m the same as you – I always have more than 1 book going on (usually an audiobook & a physical or ebook) & as I approach the end of whatever I’m reading, I usually already have a few options picked out for my next read 😛 I’m also thinking I’m gonna have to set aside some dedicated time for reading each day, bc I usually just ‘aim’ to read before bed, but often I’ve stayed up late watching Youtube videos or on FB instead & only get in 10 mins 😢

Love your responses to this tag!
