How to Read More in Less Time – (time management tips from someone who needs them)

TTT (yikes, that graphic is horrendous. I wonder who thought that was a great idea 🤨)

hello friends,

I woke up in an….extremely chatty mood it seems bc here I am writing a discussion (??) post while Im supposed to be doing a lot of other things

this post was formed from my conscience trying to help me fix my life and manage my time better but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

like really, someone who spends more time on youtube watching reading vlogs than actually reading should probably be taking her own advice don’t you think??

in truth, having read over 600 books in 4 years probably does give me some license to speak on the topic but Im just getting my daily dose of self-deprecation in

so I present to you: How to Read More in Less time

flower watercolour

flower4Allot Specific Times in the Day for Reading Onlyflower4

i’ve been using this trick since the very beginning of time. throughout the day, its really hard to find time (and peace and quiet, especially with siblings) where you can read with no distractions

and i get distracted quite easily

so I created time within my day, mainly an hour in the morning and a couple hours before bed that are strictly reading time

no commitment, no responsibilities, just me and my books

……okay i say this loosely bc we all know theres no such thing as strictly anything when your phone is a few inches away and those random cooking apps just keep ??appearing?? like?? who?? is?? responsible?? for?? this??

not I

y’all no youtubing during reading hours, I 👀 you

flower4Audiobooks, audiobooks, audiobooksflower4

I know a lot of people find it hard to concentrate on audiobooks but JUST LISTEN (or read, whatever)

I find, personally, that if an audiobook is too slow then I lose interest and my mind wanders, so I keep it at a speed that keeps my brain engaged (x2) while i’m able to still do something else

…..yes, im a compulsive multitasker, its one of my finer habits

but if youre not one for multitasking you can still insert audiobooks into any numbing activity you gotta do

laundry, commute hours, talking a walk (listen us readers sit all day reading but we also gotta get our cardio in, okay I will not take no for an answer), while your cooking, eating, drawing, exercising, literally anything that doesn’t require too much concentration

I mainly listen to audiobooks while I draw but I also listen a lot while watching those weird ‘compilations’ on youtube (at the moment, pancake and nail art have all my attention)

just give it a go

and if anyone here thinks “aUdIobOokS dOnT cOuNt aS ReAdInG” I will personally challenge you to a duel

flower4Keep Track of Progressflower4

this is my lame little gold star sticker that keeps me motivated and in check (that’s a metaphor okay, I don’t give myself gold stars, how old do you think I am)

but SERIOUSLY ever since I started tracking my reading progress in my bullet journal, I’ve been pushing myself to read more so it doesn’t seem so empty (so childish, right)

AND ITS SO FUN to see how much progress you make per day.

its like that little motivation that everyone secretly needs, very satisfying

flower watercolour

flower4Buddy Readflower4

listen, I may be a disappointment to myself but I WILL NOT disappoint my reading buddy

I don’t know why but the thought of letting someone (besides myself) down is like the worst feeling in the world and so, guilt tripping yourself into being a better reader and keeping up on a buddy read somehow is a good idea??

peer pressure 👍👍👍👍👍👍

flower4Switch up Your Reading Formatflower4

this happens to me from time to time, I get stuck in a reading format and cant progress

usually what helps me come out of that is to switch it up, so if ive been reading a lot of physical books, i’ll switch to ebooks. if I’ve been reading too much contemporary, i’ll switch it up with some fantasy. too much poetry, try a graphic novel

expand your horizons little ducks, somehow it helps.

flower4Background Noiseflower4

I’m not so great with tuning out background clamor (you’d think growing up in a big family would help with that, but nooOOOooo) so usually my reading has to take place in relative quiet

I know some people can have songs playing on the background, if that works for you then great but unless its in another language and tuned verryyyyy low, it still disrupts my reading

I did find that using white noise generators (try different sounds on noisli) helps me concentrate more, its something about the sound of rain, man, its just, magic

flower4Reading is Not a Chore, so Don’t Treat it Like Oneflower4

DESPITE EVERYTHING I SAID, if you don’t FEEL like reading, then don’t do it

reading (at least the kind I do) is supposed to be enjoyable, we aint going back to highschool English class here

reading supposed to be your escape, but if you don’t wanna escape that’s fine, go watch youtube (don’t fall into the blackhole of videos tho), go stretch your legs and go for a run, go hang out with your family and play board games that bring out the worst in everyone, idk just do life

sometimes I feel like we make books and reading a competition and like my dudes, its not

flower watercolouranywho, this concludes my incoherent rambling

I hope some part of this was helpful to you and if you actually read all that, here’s a cookie 🍪 for your perseverance

if you have any tips that helps you read and stay on track, please do share in the comments

im gonna stop talking now. have a great week everyone and don’t forget to floss,

  1. I love this post! For me I often just don’t feel a book, no matter how much I really want to read it and anticipate reading it. So if a book is not in my current mood, I typically just read a different one. Unfortunately, this also amounts to having several books as my “currently reading” which I can see causing some anxiety to people. But it’s not like I want to give up on a book, I just want to read something else in that moment.

I also completely agree how sometimes it feels like a competition, or even a race to get the best books first or the most arcs or just the most reads.

    1. omg i RELATE
my currently reading shelf is always the most obscure books possible bc mood reading is such a thing and it cannot be cured except with that book

i know and its so SAD bc thats NOT what we read for 😭 thank you sm for the lovely comment ❤

  2. I recently discovered the amazingness of audiobooks as I don’t have time to read as much as I used to. But audiobooks allow me to read and get things done at the same time and I love it!! So far I’ve just been listening to rereads… any recommendations?

    1. RIGHT! Theyre SO beneficial

rereads are a fantastic place to start. i’ve been finding it really useful to listen to classics (bc when i read them physically they can be tiring) so if youre into that, for sure check them out (and bc theyre public domain, you can find them on youtube!)

but for YA books, the lunar chronicles (if you havent read it) is amazing! ‘little fires everywhere’ was one of my favourites, all the DC icons were really fun audioreads, anddd i really enjoy thrillers so gone girl, female of the species, sometimes i lie, etc.

sorry for the huge list lol, happy reading!

  3. This is a GREAT post but…. HOW did you read over 600 books in like 4 years? I mean, your tips are amazing but I’m also certain there is some magic involved in there, too, because WOW. I admire you so much.
I really love your tips and my favorite one and the one I’m using is dedicated time to read, too, time where I just pick up my book and ignore the world for a little while. these are the best timeeeeeeeeeees. ❤

  4. OMG YouTube is the biggest distraction ever, I am like: I will watch one video and then I will read. And the next hour I realize that I have been on YouTube for 10 hours!!!
I agree 100000% that audiobooks are reading, I mean some people have disabilities and they enjoy reading. You cannot say that they aren’t reading because they listen to audiobooks.
Anyways this was a great post ❤

  6. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS POST MAY!! (and thanks for the cookie hehe, i love chocolate chip 😋🍪)

“daily dose of self-deprecation” lmao what a mood!! i literally can’t go one day without being self-deprecating ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it’s great

aahh i’ve been wanting to try out audiobooks, and you’ve just convinced me even more!!

and YES i love that you said reading shouldn’t be a chore or a competition, that’s so true and important to remember 💞 i don’t really request arcs or buy a lot of books, and i read most of my books from the library/overdrive. i’m usually ok with that but sometimes i look at other bloggers reading dozens of arcs and having book hauls and start comparing myself to them, and think that i can never be as good of a book blogger as they are 😅 but ik that’s not true!! so thank you for including that reminder, and for this amazing post!! i absolutely loved reading it (and i love your blogging voice sm!! it always brings a smile to my face) 💖

YES!!! im so glad to hear that and i cant wait to see how it works for you!

SIS, YOU SPEAK TO MY SOUL. i dont buy books often and my library has a great selection and are open to getting all the books that i request so its never been a big deal for me BUT SOMETIMES YOU JUST FEEL LESS FOR NOT HAVING BIG FUN AMAZING BOOKSHELVES AND IM SO OVER IT

thank you for reading through it all youre a queen ily ❤

  7. This post was so great. I especially loved the “Reading is Not a Chore, so Don’t Treat it Like One” part because UM I AM SOMETIMES GUILTY OF THIS. And it shouldn’t be that way! I should read not for any reason but because I like it. It is supposed to be a relaxing, fun, and MAGICAL thing, not something that I don’t look forward to. If I want to groan every time I open a book, I need to ask myself WHY???? Maybe it’s the specific book I’m reading, and maybe it just means I should take a break from reading for a bit. (“we aint going back to highschool English class here” – bwahaha that part made me laugh hardcore)

Anyways, if you ever want to buddy read something together, let me know 🙂 Thanks again for a wonderful discussion post!

ahhhhh, that would be amazing, yes we TOTALLY should buddy read something some time. Thank you so much for your sweet comment ❤ ❤ ❤ youre a star

omg, are you really doing that right now 🤨

  10. definitely agree! These are all great tips for someone who struggles with reading. Also if you’re just not in the mood to read, don’t make yourself! Sometimes a break can make you more productive than full-steam-ahead without stops. Thanks for the post and hope you have an amazing day!
