After my very long, unplanned hiatus, I have finally returned. Miss me? π
Today we’re gonna talk about plot twists.
Plot twists are like the cherries on a cake that you always tried to sneak as a kid while no one was looking (what does cherries have to do with plot twist?? no one knows but I wanted some cake and had to make you want some as well)
Plot twists are so sweetly devastating, but only when theyre done especially right. Limiting my choices to 10 was pretty difficult (as you’ll see, I cheated a bit) but it was really hard to narrow them down. There are so many incredible books with spectacular plot twists, I might have to make a part 2 some time. . .
10. Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon
This book actually received a lot of slack for the unexpected plot twist and I kinda agree with the reasoning but come on, you gotta admit, you totally didn’t see that one coming.
9. Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson
The ending of this book kinda threw the whole thing off for me. I really enjoyed the buildup of the plot, it was absolutely remarkable. And even thought the plot twist really grabbed me by surprise, I found it just left more confusion and unanswered questions for the reader to have to muddle over.
8. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
This book really wasn’t the greatest. It’s kind of like a collection of massive cliches; special snowflakes, plain-jane-girls-who-get-noticed-by-royal-hot-guys, unexpected!!powers!!, love triangle and the list goes on (but i forgot a lot of it, pardon me). However, DESPITE the cliches, the plot twist was pretty darn good.
So, there’s that.
7. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
THIS BOOK FRICKEN SHOOK ME UP. It wasn’t even the many plot twists that were sprinkled through the book, it was just the whole concept of the plot. It was like every page was a plot twist. Fricken hell.
6. Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones
This book ruined me. Dammit, I cried so much from that plot twist, like HELLA didn’t see that one coming. ;-; Book 2 please hurry my heart cannot last this long.
5. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
We Were Liars was one of the first contemporaries I’ve read and I was sooooo lost and confused about where the plot was going until i reached the final chapters and then dammit it all made sense.
Great book, great plot twist.
4. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
This book is a work of art. Not only does the book take place over a long arc of time but its so well developed and complex; honestly I’ve never read a book so raw and powerful. Not to mention that plot twist, ohhhh boy was that a good one.
3. Illuminae by Aime Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
This fricken book makes it to all of my top 10s because it so damn good. Illuminae is like one of those timeless books that will forever be remembered for its ingenuity. And that plot twist π pure π pure π pain. π
2. Finnikin of the Rock / Froi of the Exiles by Melina Marchetta
Okay so I kinda cheated on this one. Yes, I chose two books BUT theyre from the same series annddd if you know anything about me, its that I’m absolute trash for anything Melina Marchetta touches.
Now where Finnikin of the Rock had one MASSIVE plot twist that makes you feel like youre whole life has been empty until this moment, Froi of the Exiles has SO MANY BLOODY twists and turns; it shreds your heart, messes with your head, and just leaves you physically and emotionally exhausted.
10/10 these books go read them right now.
1. Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas
OH DAMN this book.
I swear I can’t think about the words “thriller” or “plot twist” without this book coming to mind first because UP TILL THIS DAY, this book had me SHOOK over the plot twist.
FRICKEN
SHOOK.
You haven’t read a thriller until you read Dangerous Girls. I promise it won’t disappoint.
Bonus: Stolen: A Letter to my Captor by Lucy Christopher
And because there were so many great choices, I just HAD to add this one in as a bonus bc like hell i’m not going to try and figure out how to rate this book.
I just wanted to include it bc there has not been a book that has made me cry the likes of this book. Honestly, I stayed up till 2 am crying my heart out over this damned book. Can’t take the feels. Gahhhh.
So that’s my Top 10+ Best Plot Twists in YA. Which of these books shook you up? And which book have you read that you think had the best plot twist?
Until the next post,
I have seen Dangerous Girls all over, and added it to my TBR. I need to giddy up on reading that. The Illuminae Files is one of my favorite series, even though I don’t consider myself an SFF reader. I am glad you did not see that coming in Everything, Everything, I did, but I still loved it, because I love Yoon’s storytelling and she crafts fantastic characters. We Were Liars did shock me. I am getting a little misty just thinking about it. Great list.

Ahhhhh! You TOTALLY need to get on Dangerous Girls, it’s one heck of a thriller.
lol, you must be a much better detective than I was. But I’m glad you liked it just as much!
Thanks :3

lol … I hated that plot twist in Everything, Everything but I was also spoiled for it so … I think that might have ruined things a bit.
I do love Red Queen (yes … I love it … those clichΓ©s are like comfort food to me). We Were Liars is a great one and of course Illuminae is in a world of it’s own in awesome! Those are some really good plot twists!
fantastic list π

There’s a lot of good books here! The twists in Everything, Everything and We Were Liars are probably the best two I’ve ever read. Definitely did not see them coming! Illuminae is one of my favorite books as well!

I’ve actually only read Everything, Everything, out of these ten; I personally felt like the plot twist made it more cliche.
Have you read A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis? I loved the plot twist in that one!
