Genre Deep Dive

Genre Deep Dive: High Fantasy – i read these behemoths so you don’t have to

gdd

let me correct that tag line to: “i read these behemoths so you can trust my recommendations and begin reading my favoutites”

because i’m sweet & caring like that 🙂

so, this blog idea has been bouncing around in my brain for a long time and im so!! excited!! to finally be putting it together and presenting it to you

(and also it took a FREAKING long time to compose all this mess and i feel like i forgot how to speak, so forgive me from now)

scroll

for some backstory, i started reading in a serious way back in 2015 when i was a teenager (yes, long long time ago) and unsurprisingly, i consumed 99.99% young adult fiction. i loved YA contemporaries, i loved YA fantasy, i loved YA mystery, i loved it all.

and i still do.

but lately, i’ve been branching out and trying to read outside of my comfort zone and guys let me tell you, the experience has been enlightening.

so i decided it would be fun to catalogue my thoughts and experiences with what started as a successful little experiment (that has now transformed into new reading habits) in this little series that i have unoriginally named “Genre Deep Dive”

basically, i will be mentioning 10 books per post relating to a genre outside of the borders of Youth Fiction that will briefly explore my thoughts, ratings, and a quick guide of where to start for a beginner.

i hope this is a series that both you and i will enjoy so that i can continue to shower you, my friends, with recommendations of my favourite books, bc that’s really what i do best

BUT ENOUGH RAMBLING, lets get on with our first genre deep dive:

the dreaded, intimidating, ~ High Fantasy ~

*children scream, sirens blare, pterodactyl screeching can be heard in the distance*

the first 10 books that i have read in this genre:

ratings

2 things to mention:

1) i’m counting era 1 and era 2 of mistborn separately (era 1 is the first three books in the series, and era 2 is the next three books) bc they are very different in terms of plot & characters and i dont think it’s fair to group them together for my purpose of reviewing

2) i have read all currently published books in ‘mistborn’ and the ‘lies of locke lamora’ series even though only the first books of the series have been pictured above.

so, let’s begin

wts

IF YOU ARE A: low to moderate YA fantasy reader, i would highly suggest you start with Brandon Sanderson.

His books are incredibly accessible in writing style and follow a lot of the same format and development as most YA fantasies but just on an EPIC, GRAND SCALE

his books generally include incredible world building, beautifully detailed magic systems, a whole slew of interesting characters, and lots of action

i’m going to be extremely biased here and say start with Mistborn (that’s where i started and i absolutely adored – and sobbed my eyes out) or Warbreaker (since it currently a standalone atm, and it is a very fast, entertaining read)

(also the fan content for sanderson books is amazing, you will ALWAYS have fan edits to laugh over, fanart to admire, and friends to scream into the void with, including me ofc)

moving on

IF YOU ARE A: big YA fantasy reader and you want to expand your fantasy scope, let’s say you’ve tried and tested Brando Sando and you want to continue along the high fantasy path, then, i would suggest you try the Lies of Locke Lamora or Kings of Wlyd

both books are heist/adventure driven, incredibly hilarious and include copious  amounts of character development & action

the reason that i would recommend them for a more well-versed fantasy reader is because, these books are dense and take some time to fall into. i know what it’s like to hold a mammoth of a book and feel incredibly intimidated when you keep reading and reading and reading and you’ve only barely made a dent in progress.

so i would HIGHLY recommend them for when you’re comfortable with the high fantasy format because there is a learning curve

wta

IF YOU ARE A: low to moderate YA fantasy reader, i would suggest staying away from dense, slow-paced books like Red Sister and the Fifth Season

i don’t mean to discourage you from reading these books, they are definitely well loved and praised in the book community but i think they would pose more challenges than other, more accessible books in this genre.

so, once you’re a seasoned high fantasy reader who is comfortable with big, plot centered books that take their time to develop character and the world, definitely check these out.

and there you have it, my first installation of my newest series (one that i am VERY excited about). i hope you enjoyed and i’ve piqued your interest in this genre (if you haven’t tried it yet) or gave you some recommendations (if you’re already a fan of the genre)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING THIS JUMBLED, DISASTER OF A POST and please feel free to leave any feedback or comments or areas you think i could improve (or be more coherent in) for the next segment of this series

this is me as of FINALLY finishing this post

and i want to know, have you tried reading outside of your comfort genre? what new genre did you try and how did that go?

that’s it for now,

mayy

  1. High fantasy is my faaaaaavorite. I think these recommendations are pretty solid – some high fantasy is really too dense for the average fantasy reader, especially because YA fantasy has gotten lighter over the years. Great post! 💜

  2. Ahh, May, this is such an amazing series!! I already love it so much.😭💓

You’ve inspired me to go out of my reading comfort zone more already! I’m not 100% sure if I will be trying high fantasy because I’m a bit scared of fantasy in general but if I ever want to then I will be referring to your recs for low/moderate YA fantasy for sure. :)) For me YA fantasy IS out of my comfort zone haha but I think as I read more it will become less and less crazy for me to be reading it and then I can move on to more fantasy.

I LOVED THIS!! Also your graphics were so cute and this was really well organized!

for sure, for sure. reading fantasy can be exhausting if you’re not in the right mindset, so i totally feel you. can’t wait to hear your thoughts if you decide to branch out a little😉 no pressure

  3. Wow, I LOVE this post and I can’t wait to read more of these genre deep dive posts! (Lol, can I get a thriller one, pretty please? 😉 )

I’ve been trying to branch into adult high fantasy and yikes I haven’t read any of these, tho Red Sister is currently on my shelf! I think the only true high high fantasy book I’ve read is The Witchwood Crown by Tad Williams, and wow that was a beast of book to get through. It took me over a month and had 10 billion different POVs which was annoying because I only liked 5 of them tho really only 2 were my favs. It was still pretty good and an admirable book but oof.

The Final Empire and Warbreaker are both on my TBR so I’m definitely gonna have to move those higher up. I’ve been meaning to read the Mistborn series for awhile now and I still have yet to read a Brandon Sanderson book, eeek. I really need to change that!

  5. I really want to get into High Fantasy or at least try but my brain goes all hfkewhgerg when I try to. I’ve tried to read a Portuguese book and that was alright but then I tried Priory and I could barely reach 100 pages. I’m scared of trying again to be honest! But I’ve heard great things about The Poppy War, sooooo … I really don’t know xD

    1. hahaha relatable! totally understandable, there’s so much you have to focus on when reading fantasy (ESPECIALLY high fantasy) but i hope poppy war works for you if you decide to read it!!

  6. Ahh what a fantastic start to this series, i’ll be looking forward to it and to ALL OF YOUR RECOMMENDATIONS AHH I am so very excited about it! I’m not a big high fantasy reader, I’ve been getting more and more into fantasy in the past few years, but it’s not my favorite genre, I’d love to branch out more and maybe discover some amazing reads though so I’ll follow your advice for sure. thank you for this ahh can’t wait to read more of this series 😀

  7. Loved this post, May! I loved The Fifth Season as an early fantasy reader (it’s one of my favorite books) but totally agree on Red Sister — that book is so well loved but I honest to god struggled SO hard. the first two hundred pages seriously contain nothing.

    1. thank you smmmmm 💖 the fifth season was so unique and fresh from most fantasies ive read
yesss red sister was so long and tiring and i was so disappointed, but eh, we tried

  8. thank you SO much for blessing us with this post! I claim that my favorite genre is fantasy, but I’ve been way too scared to branch out into adult fantasy. Actually though, all of the books you featured here are on my TBR! i’m definitely gonna start with Mistborn though because the general consensus is that it’s the most accessible out of all of these! I can’t wait for more posts from this series 💖

  9. Ooh, this series is amazing!! This post was very helpful, because while I do read adult books, high fantasy is VERY intimidating. I’m currently reading Jade City by Fonda Lee, and I’m LOVING it for sure, but it’s dense and a lot harder to read than YA (duh) – I’m just progressing a lot slower than with contemporary, or historical novels (I mean, obviously..) Anyway, I’m happy to see Mistborn, because I read and looved the trilogy. I need to read more by Sanderson, and might just start with Warbreaker, especially because you mentioned it being a stand alone currently. I’m sad to see you didn’t like The Fifth Season all that much, because I’ve recently bought it, but oh well, I still have high hopes for it! Great post! 🙂

i feel youuu! you totally got to me in the right mindset when reading high fantasy, so intimidating. hahah, relatable. im DYING to get my hands on Jade City, i’ve only heard amazing thing about it and i hope its a new favourite for you
mistborn broke my heart, i will never forgive sanderson for what he did to me in that series
i CANT WAIT to hear your thoughts on warbreaker (whenever you get around to reading it, no pressure 😈)

i hope YOU LOVE the fifth season, so many of my friends loved it, so maybe it’s just me lol

  10. This post is just perfect? How even. I’ve been meaning to read Red Sister soon (one of my favorite bloggers hyped up the series a LOT so I have high expectations and a great need to read it) and Fifth Season, and this post is just what I needed to get around to it! I loved the graphics, btw! The scroll format is absolutely amazing and it’s so beautiful?? I can only imagine how much work it must have taken to make those (and this entire post) so thank you so much for doing this! ❤️
