2018 recapped in books: the good, the bad, and the stats

I see everyone doing these “Top 10 books of 2018!!!!” or “10 worst books!!” recaps and WHEN I TRIED to conform and find only 10 BOOKS?? out of the 180 that i read, i lost half my mind.

so instead, i countered with like,,,,,,,,,my top 25 books of 2018 πŸ˜‚ but hey, theyre categorized based on genre, so look at me being organized and fancy

we’re totally not going to bring up how i just ghosted for like 3 weeks and was awful at reading and commenting on blogs, im sorry, okay, december was weird and i had this strange flu that came and went for like 2 weeks, it was all just so much fun

but i miss you all and i should be back now. ~new year, new may~

anyways………..

xi seriously love how gr shows the stats

z

feel free to read any of these immediately and then come scream with me, im still sobbing over 98% of them.

i don’t want to dwell on the bads of the year, but below i’ve listed my least favourite books, biggest disappointments, and books i couldn’t even finish

I’M SORRY if any of your favourites are on this list 😭😭 it just wasn’t for me and i’m still glad you enjoyed them

also for books that i ranted about, my reviews will be linked for your viewing pleasure (if you care, that is)

e1j

  • all 5 of these books were highly anticipated reads for me and they all SUCH BIG DISAPPOINTMENTS, how sad
  • i’m really sad to see City of Brass and Not the Girls You’re Looking for on this list bc they both feature Arab and Muslim main characters and i wasΒ so excitedΒ for them bc its so RARE to see these represented in YA but they were just handled really badly (in my honest, professional opinion)
  • i don’t want to talk about Escaping from Houdini, just know that Thomas deserved better and im v bitter

f1h

  • Definition of Indefinable Things is everything i dislike put together in one book, im sorry, it was just REALLY bad (i go into detail in my review)
  • Once again, I am Thunder is about a muslim girl and i was really disappointed to see how the representation was handled, there were just too many upsetting aspects of this book
  • i dont even want to talk about the Pisces bc it was probably my most disliked book i’ve ever read in my entire life.

g1i

  • i can’t speak much for these books since i wasn’t able to complete them, i know a couple are very beloved in the reading community, but they just didn’t click with me
  • either the writing wasn’t my cup of tea or the pace was just toooo slow but my opinions on them are very limited.

that concludes my year.

2018 had it’s ups and downs and i’m really proud of myself for what i’ve accomplished this year in terms of life and book related stuff. I found so many new favourite series and standalones and authors. it was also so sad to have to see some of my favourite series end and having to part with those worlds and characters.

i seriously love reading Yearly Recap posts, so i’ll be looking out for yours. i want to know which books were your favourites and which books disappointed you and which books were just meh. TELL ME EVERYTHING!

i hope 2019 brings us so much more happiness and fantastic books and i wish you the absolute and very best πŸ’–,

mayy

  2. Ooooh I love how you organized this post!! Picking 10 favorites out of 180 sounds actually impossible so this definitely works lol. and also your graphics are so cute omgπŸ’•

I never read Illuminae (this is a problem and it needs to be fixed) because every time I looked at it at the store it seemed so intimidating?? Then I realized this was a dumb reason to avoid it because I only hear great things about it, so I actually just bought the entire series a few weeks ago!!! I plan to read it sometime in 2019 AND IM SO HYPED.

Also I haven’t read All Your Perfects or Verity yet but I absolutely NEED to because CoHo. Her books are genius. do you have a favorite one by her??

This was such a great post May & I’m happy that you read so many great books this year!! I hope your 2019 is filled with even more wonderful readsπŸ’žπŸ’žπŸ’ž happy new year!! πŸŽ‰

Schwab’s A Darker Shade of Magic series, because all I’ve heard about her books is that they are *amazing*, so I’m really excited! I’m planning to read Vicious soon because I’ve heard it’s similar to Six of Crows, which is hands down my favorite duology in the world 😊 Anyways, wishing you an amazing 2019!

  11. You had such an impressive reading year, wow, 180 books that’s amazing!
Frederik Backman is my best friend’s favorite author and though he keeps pressing me to read it, I always say it’s not going to be my type of read. I’m mostly a YA reader, but seeing him show many times in your list makes me wonder if I should give him a chance. His stories sound interesting, but I’m not sure if I’ll fit with the writing style.
I’m suuuuper excited to read Obsidio. It is one of my most anticipated finales, but the year of 2018 was a mess so I didn’t get the chance to read it yet. I’m excited, since I only heard positive things about the conclusion.
I hope you have just an amazing reading year in 2019!

Oooh, I think I have a used copy of The Nightingale from my Grandma somewhere on my shelf…definitely going to have to bump it up on my TBR now!

Also, I totally agree about An Enchantment of Ravens being a disappointment! With a story involving faeries and such a beautiful cover, I guess I just had too high of expectations, because I found the book to be very mehh :/

  17. sometimes i just sit back and find it amazing how alike our taste in books truly is, our friendship has been blessed by the universe & Victor Vale (he would grant us exactly ONE rare, barely detectable smile)

I love Sadie so much, and it’s the book that got me into audiobooks, so there’s THAT c: c: also I was so tempted to try “All your perfects” but I physically cannot read sad books anymore. It’s reached the point where I’m just emotionally weak af and can only take the fluffiest marshmallow plots where all conflict is solved in two pages. & even then I’m terrified and suspicious that everything’s going to spontaneously turn angsty, I’m a complete mess lskdjf

+++ I have “Everything I Never Told You” on my shelf, but I have no idea what it’s about. I just randomly bought with no self-control, but since you love it I now feel v hopeful and excited to read it ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀ ❀

    2. The Art of Feeling,,,, okay, I’m actually out of words, we’ve discussed that book to the core
    3. Starry Eyes is SUCH A PERFECT hate to love romance, I recently reread it and realized why I enjoyed it so much the first time around

  21. 180 books… You have shamed us all XD Unfortunately, I’ve only read very few out of your list so cannot really comment on the others – I LOVED The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein as well. So, so eerie and an amazing retelling, though I’m a bit unreliable seeing as I didn’t read the original yet ^^’

I see you love Colleen Hoover… I need to try her books out! Admittedly, not something I usually reach for but I’ve been reading more NA lately and feel like I’m in the mood for that. Also, Christina Lauren – I’ve heard amazing things! Specifically, Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating but I’ve been seeing her books around a lot since the beginning of times.

I’m so sorry you were disappointed by all those books! I personally enjoyed An Enchantment of Ravens and am SUPER looking forward to getting my hands on The City of Brass one of these days, but I can see how Immortal Reign would not deliver… I’ve seen the series go downhill since midway through and have to say the only reason I keep reading is because I’m absolute Magneo trash. I read the first two books from Maniscalco but didn’t even attempt to continue. So, so boring. And I personally didn’t like Thomas at all (I’M SORRY OKAY T_T)

    Great post, May! ❀

i'm honestly not a HUGE na reader but im getting more into it recently (i just need plot, i cant take a book solely focused on romance) and yeah there are some bad ones but im also so surprised at how many REALLY good ones i came across. cristina lauren has the best cutesy feel good books and im so looking forward to reading josh and hazel

i'm SO glad to hear you enjoyed an enchantment of ravens. i FEEL you on immortal reign, the series hit a peak and just fell from there but YES i loved mangeo till the end, its just sad it had to end on such a low note 😭😭

fdlkafjldakfas Im going to PRETEND i didnt see that, lol nah i can see why you wouldnt like thomas but I'LL STAY HAPPY here in my little bubble hahah

i hope youre having an amazing 2019 ❀ ❀ ❀ and reading all the 5 stars

      1. Hahaha well, I’d love to have less of a social life at times so I could read/blog more so do you wanna swap? XD

I totally get that, I love romance but it needs to have something extra to satisfy me fully. I’m currently in the mood for contemporaries so I think Lauren will be right up my alley!

Hahahaha well more Thomas for you, then, right? πŸ˜› It might have something to do with listening to the audiobooks instead of reading the books? He just sounded awful, and was narrated by a woman, so I’m not completely sure whether that had anything to do with my displeasure xD

Thank you, my lovely, and you as well! ❀ ❀ ❀
