Tuesday Top 10s

Top 10 Things I Love to See in Books + Books that did them great!

tuesday top 10s final

my disclaimer for this post is that none of these rankings actually count bc these are all my favourite and i love seeing them in books so much and if i could rank them all #1 i would.

sadly, life isn’t fair.

so here we go, some of the things I ADORE in books.

flower watercolour10. friendships

beautiful, wholesome, sweet friendships have been garnering more attention in YA books and I adore it. it’s not something hard to come by, but it does improve a book immensely (in my very humble, honest, professional opinion)

some very adorable books that ft. beautiful friendships are:

flower watercolour9. family relationships

my weakness.

i will honestly overlook SO MANY things about a book if it means the family representation is stellar

i dedicated an ENTIRE post on books with amazing, soft, beautiful sibling relationships, so if you want more recs – read them and come scream with me plz, i need a support group.

flower watercolour8. slowburn

i mean this in every way. slowburn or a strong build-up in plot, character relationships, conflict, resolution.

they just make everything more beautiful and when you finally reach the result of all that waiting, it makes it soooooooooo worth it.

some books that killed it at this were:

7. enemies to lovers

its not just the fact that their characters have to arc from hating each other to loving each other, but its the BANTER that comes with it that just makes this such a delectable trope

love me some wit and banter

some really memorable books were:

Image result for legend coverImage result for starry eyes coverImage result for the wrath and the dawn cover

flower watercolour6. forbidden romance

i just fricken love forbidden romance (not in a gross way, nah get that ish out of here) but in the ‘romeo-and-juliet’ way where the entire world is against the two characters from being together and they have to defy all odds, gosh dammit, 5 stars!!

some of my favourites are:

Image result for the bird and the blade cover    Image result for a million junes cover    Image result for daughter of smoke and bone cover

flower watercolour5. the mean character who adopts the fluff ball

is there anything cuter than this?? (the only answer is no) and what makes it even better is that it usually is accompanied by the ‘found family’ trope and gahhh im so weak for all this sap

but i just LOVE when there’s a villain or super solemn character who just so happens to adopt a smol fluffy character and they have to put up with each other and it just is so adorable to read

i can’t think of a book that did this better than:

Image result for vicious duology cover   Related image

flower watercolour4. anti-heros

i think we all love a good anti-hero. heroes are great and all, but seeing flawed characters that are dealing with more than ‘saving the world’ and have depth and dimension infused into their personalities, ugh so realistic, so good

is there a greater example than:

Image result for six of crows duology cover

flower watercolour3. plot twists

i live for those plot twists that make you rethink your entire life and everything you did leading up to that moment

the plot twists that make you want to chuck the book at the wall or out of a window but then pick it up and cradle it

those plot twists are the reason i read tbh. and i really don’t know how authors can pull it off bc i dont think i could ever craft a plot twist that would make someone lose their mind

anyways, some books that excelled at this, were:

flower watercolour2. illustrations

i honestly i dont care whether this is small little doodles that appear at the beginning of each chapter or pretty title pages for each sections of the book, or mass amounts of illustrations

I. JUST. LOVE. IT.

maybe its the artist deep, down inside me but i just cherish the books that include this extra little touch

everyone is pretending to be shocked right now

flower watercolour1. circular narrative

ever since i found out this plot device existed, i was sold.

there are VERY few authors skilled enough to pull this off perfectly. a lot of times i have seen this fall flat and when it does it kind of ruins the whole story

an author who specifically knows how do create a circular narrative is, my queen, Melina Marchetta, and she played this plot device exceptionally well in one of my favourite books of ALL FRICKEN TIME

if you havent read this yet, we cant be friends, soz 👀

flower watercolour

so that wraps it up for my favourite things to see in books, there are a lot of wonderful things that book expose you to, but these are just some of my absolute favourites.

what about you? do you agree with my list? what are some of your favourite things to see in books? what are your least favourite?

thanks so much for reading guys and i hope you’re staying happy and hydrated,

mayy

  1. I LOVE THIS POST SO MUCH.
I love friendships in books, too, I am always craving them and when they’re amazing, I’m a fan. I can’t believe I haven’t read any of the friendships books you’re suggesting here, ughh. I need to read This Adventure Ends especially as soon as I can because it sounds awesomeeeeeeeeee.
AND FAMILY! yes to family, I also love great family in my books, too and I adored My Life Next Door as well as Far From The Tree (thinking about that book makes me saaaad).
AND SLOWBURNING yes! And enemies to lovers, I’m all for that one and I love The Wrath and the Dawn so, very very much. Need to read Starry Eyes as soon as possible!
And everything oh and plot twists, yes the ones that make you gasp like WHAT HAPPENED, I love itttttttttttt.
So that was a comment of me screaming at all times I apologize.

    1. WHAT???!! WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DONT KNOW ANYONE ELSE?? THATS A TRAGEDY!!! That book was one of the earlier YA contemps i read and it made me fall in LOVE!! the garretts 😭😭 omg their cuteness is too much to handle especially george! ❤

ahahha june can be polarizing but day is a little sweet soft boy who needs protecting fkdjalkfa.

okay so from what i remember from english class, its a plot structure that starts in one place and cycles through the story one event at a time until it ends back where the story originated. (paraphrasing with google's help ofc) BUT ITS SO SATISFYING and gratifying when the end of a book matches up to the beginning ughhh love it!!

hahahha thank you for support ❤ it means the world to me ❤

      1. Oh whoops I accidentally hit send 😂
        damn george is something else

yep… is it just me who wishes I knew day… and could hang out with him and even tess?

oh ok! have you ever watched gilmore girls? it’s a little like that because SPOILERS!!!!!!
in the year in the life rory writes a book titled ‘the Gilmore girls’ and then lorelai tells her to ‘drop the ‘the’’ making the watcher assume she wrote some kind of screenplay! therefore going back in a circle 😉

May, please get inside your little head that IT IS A PLEASURE chatting with you. xxxxx

  3. i guess we can’t be friends since i haven’t read jellicoe road 💔 (BUT DO NOT FEAR I’VE ADDED IT TO MY TBR – along with most of the books you mentioned here that i haven’t read – and i can’t wait to read it!!)

i absolutely ADORE well-written friendships!! omg i’m even more excited to read this adventure ends now 😍 i loved the friendships (and romance) in foolish hearts; emma mills is a contemporary queen

omg slowburn and enemies-to-lovers are literally my FAVE. YES @ the witty banter and mutual pining and pain!! (i love reading books that make me suffer :’) ) but it’s so worth it at the end. aahh i loved the wrath and the dawn!! also omg i didn’t know legend had enemies-to-lovers, time to move it up my tbr!!

omg i still haven’t read six of crows (don’t kill me) but i’m definitely planning on reading it soon. it’s SO hyped though and that makes me a little scared tbh, i really hope i’ll love it as much as everyone does. AHHH i’m really excited to read it though 😍 especially for the anti-heroes

great post as always!! every single time i read one of your posts, my TBR grows by 1000 books and i love it (kinda) :’) 💞

    1. NO WORRIES DEZZY, I’LL MAKE AN EXCEPTION FOR YOU (but only bc its on your tbr and you’re going read it soon wink wink)

ahhhh you’ve READ FOOLISH HEARTS SO YOU KNOW how incredible emma mills is when it comes to friendships and the humour omg stellar

hahahha i FEEL you, the hype sometimes makes it wanna DASH in the other direction but i DO hope you loves it as much as all of us bc its so worth it!!

thank you so much sweetie i cant even begin to explain how much your comments and support mean to me ❤ ❤ ❤ (and you're welcome for making your tbr grow 😉 )

    1. I DID I DID!! I ADORE jenn bennett’s books so much and her newest one is killing me to wait for the cuteness.

i cant wait for you to read starry eyes, i’ll be looking forward to your review and i hope you love it bc it’s totally alex approximately level of cuteness ❤

  4. first of all, how are you a literal content pumping machine?? i mean, i look away for FIVE SECONDS and you’ve got at LEAST a million posts in. give a girl some room to breathe, you know (*settles in with popcorn*).
well written family relationships make me so soft and emo what the heck. i think i’m still crying over simon’s family because dudes? they play profile hunting on facebook on christmas?
i’m adding all the ‘slow burn’ recs to my tbr because you can never go wrong with those. have you read ‘nevermore’ by kelly kreagh? it’s got one of the most enchanting slow burns i’ve ever read and it’s so…. gritty in a lyrical, poetic way. it has some haunting edgar allan poe content and your classic opposites-attract couple (a goth loner and a popular cheerleader).
obviously, you loved starry eyes, there’s a reason why i love your content. that was one smokin’ adorable story. honestly, no matter the trope, if your characters don’t bant then do they even have any chemistry? and are they even acceptable characters? i think not.
you are one of two people who are literally after my life to read jellicoe road. not even kidding, i don’t know why i’m stalling when i’ve heard NOTHING but praise about this book. i shall redeem myself by reading this v.v. soon.

    1. I LITERALLY LIVE FOR YOUR COMMENTS FJKDLJAFJLKA

okay first of all, im barely getting any posts out but okay queen, you keep supporting me like this and i’ll end up crying and it’ll be your fault

I HAVENT READ NEVERMORE AND I’VE NEVER HEARD OF IT AND THATS A TRAGEDY IN ITSELF BC WHAT THE HELL IT SOUNDS AMAZING (is my caps lock key broken, at this point, it should be)

like if my great amazing romance doesn’t include 16 years of solid, top quality banter it aint true love, next.
IM SO LOOKING FOWARD TO HEARING YOUR THOUGHTS ON JELLICOE but nimika if you dont like it i’ll cry myself a river and float away in it so dont make me go through all that effort

      Liked by 1 person

      1. no, i live for your comments :’)))))) (yes, these are my double chins).

and don’t worry at all, i don’t think it’s even remotely possible for me to not like that book after it being recommended by two of my favorite book people. ❤

  5. omg YESSS to this post. friendships (especially squads of funny/mismatched friends) and family relationships (especially siblings as we both know) are two of my FAVORITE THINGS

and then also i love slow-burn, friends to lovers, and unconventional formatting

    but ESPECIALLY FRIENDSHIPS AND FAMILY

  6. This is such an amazing post, I love all of these things too! Soft friendships are the sweetest things to read about, I love it so much. Especially if it’s like a Slytherin – Hufflepuff kinda friendship, that’s so cute. 💕
