Writing Rambles

Developments in Writing: In Which we Establish the Basics

book

Greetings, hello @ my fellow readers,

I thought I’d switch the content of my blog up a bit, since I’ve never shown any actual semblance of organization here, and add a strange and random segment for benefit of your entertainment, or maybe knowledge or maybe you’ll just ignore this entirely not even blaming you, idk. It’s a work in progress, at least give me that.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo, it’s not really common knowledge, but I’ve kinda, sorta, not-really, been writing a book.

Everyone is probably all like side-eyeing me like please May, do you know how many people are “writing” a book too, you’re not special or anything!!1!1! and i’m here to tell you that, I, in fact was born a Special Snowflake and that by default makes my story more special than yours. Soz, I don’t make the rules, that’s just what happened when I was born.

Real talk though, I’m not entirely sure if this story will EVER be a thing that will even see the light of day, I CAN’T HEAR YOUR PROTESTS FROM CANADA, EMILY but writing has kinda been my escape (where I can be an evil creator and wear a red cape and have an evil laugh while peasants cower in the back) and it makes me “happy” so that’s a thing.

Anyways, onto said book. Let me just run you through the basic jist of it

flower1from here onward, we shall commonly and forever refer to it as SN

flower1i’m the lame type of person who doesn’t even know how to classify their own book, so we’ll just say it’s Historic YA ?Fantasy? Fiction

flower1ft. friendships

flower1it contains dual POVs but the main character is a smol (but fierce) 18 year old girl

flower1said girl is forced to make lots of decisions, one which leads her to instinctively stabbing a guard in the leg (dont worry, he’s a bad guy)

flower1ft. a very wholesome bromance

Um, I think I’ve covered the basics.

As of now, I have written 41,000 words. My goal is anywhere between 80,000-90,000 and my beta-reader editor, Emily has given me a deadline of January 1st, 2018 (i’m probably going to have to ask for an extension – I’ll get back to you on that)

But I don’t want to bore you with anymore dreary talk, so instead I’m going to create a list (bc everyone loves lists) on things I do to help the writing creativity flow. After all, I’m most definitely a seasoned writer since I’ve been working on the same story for the past two years.

terms and conditions may apply

flower2drink lots and lots of tea bc caffeine stops you from sleeping = more writing time

flower2instead of going to sleep at a decent hour, push you bed time just slightly (or until you can smell colours and see the sun climbing the horizon)

flower2remember that your characters are a reflection of yourself, so try to make them as bitter and narcissistic as possible (trust me on this one)

flower2use common lines like “she was not like other girls” and “she let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding” bc studies show that the more common your line, the more readers can relate

flower2you are always short on love interests. even without reading your WIP, I know that you need to add some more love interests to the plot

flower2if you have tried all these tips and writer’s block is still residing in your bedroom and eating all the cereal, then it’s time for drastic measures. one, add a lost princess. two, make the love interest (our endgame, not the other losers) a lost prince. three, give them both daddy issues.

flower2if you’re still having a tough time, then close your eyes and slam your hand against the keyboard a few times. whatever appears stays in final draft.

And there you have it! My top F O O L P R O O F techniques for getting the creative juices alive and well. Can someone please tell me if they actually enjoyed this rambling session bc im so. . .all over the place.

Also, i’d love to hear your tips and tricks of beating writer’s block!! (bc goodness knows that I dont write as much as i should)

Until next time,

mayy

  3. Ahhh this is so great you’re talking about you writing a little bit – and that you have been wrking on the same story for so long as well. Are we twins or something??! I hope you’ll be able to meet your deadline, because with friendships and amazing bromances, I SO WANT to hear more about this book and read it! 😀

  4. I think you forgot to add 100+ long, highly exhaustive descriptions of the I-don’t-even-realize-how-drop-dead-gorgeous-I-look heroine, at least I know it works wonders for me.

seriously though, I’m very intrigued by the stabbing accident. the dude probably had it coming. you had me at bromance + smol but fierce.
very cruel how you give us so little info though!!!!

  5. Ooh, May, I love this post!! I’m also working on writing right now, so I get that it can be hard. I’m excited, though, to see how it goes for you. 😊 It’s a hard and fun experience, as you must know. ❤️

I can’t say I’ve ever really had writer’s block, but I do sometimes just need to take a break from writing.

  6. (This is Bentley from Goodreads by the way – I saw your post that led me here!)

May! That’s so awesome you’ve done so much work on your WIP!!! I’ve begun my own novel as well but I’m not nearly as far along as you. I’m very impressed and wish you well! Following you now so I’m in on your updates in the future. 🙂

  8. First, you’re just this smol ball of cuteness! Love the post! I started writing a book in February it’s at 32,284 words and I’m shooting for like 110,000-150,000 but I haven’t written basically anything all summer.

What I tend to do while in a block is read over it, make edits.

TIP- If you can’t find anything to edit in your story, you’re not growing as a writer. We should be constantly evolving and finding things that can be made better within our writing.

I edit. I edit. I edit. Editing takes AGES especially when you have nearly 40 chapters. And then yesterday…I got and idea, and I’ve been running on that since. Editing can secretly spark little blooms of creativity in your mind and those little blooms can change your story so much in such a great way.

    Good Luck!!!
    Lot’s of Love,
    -Ash
